All long-time fans of Dragonmun Studios know that we have had a run of bad luck with message board hosting services and servers since almost from he beginning. We've had several good runs, with many places, but unforeseen circumstances on the forums hosting-sides have always seem to come up and bite us in the butts.
First we started off with a service called EZ Boards, which lasted a good long time. However, as our message board there grew more and more popular the amount of advertisements increased and it eventually got to the point where we couldn't log into the page without having to battle constant pop-ups and forced advertisements.
Next we went with the message board service called Bravenet (or rather we tried using the message boards that they offered). This did not last long as their "message board" was nothing more than an over-glorified guestbook script.. and frankly we were spoiled by a fully functional message board.
Our next move was to a service that I cannot even remember, but we weren't there for long anyways as we found the amazing
Inner revolutions hosting service! They hooked us up with not only an account, but a really nice modified version of a PHPbb message board.
This lasted us a VERY long time.
Dragonmun Studios was hosted with
Inner revolutions for years before we started having trouble with modifying scripts and taking care of the various things we needed for the site to grow. Seeing as we had no access to the back-end of our account, there was a constant need to bug the administrators to help us out.
This worked well all the way up until
Clan Bob's Great Crash in which
Presence The Amazing became over-worked with trying to help the webcomic community out by editing code for the Bobs. Although there were some other Irev "staffers" that could help me out,
Presence was usually the only one that would answer me when I would ask for help.
This lead to absolutely NOTHING happening with Dragonmun.com for a little over a year. As I was paying for my account (and was apparently one of the few to do so) this really got frustrating, so I decided to try again with getting help. Presence, as it turned out, was busier than ever and so I ended up talking with a gentleman by the name of "Gizmo" who in more words basically told me to @#$%! off.
This really upset me and I sought out a new hosting service while trying hard to maintain a basic site on the freebie account that I had won in a
Unix Daemons contest.
Eventually I found a decent message board service by the name of
Sudden Launch and attempted to move the community there while I moved the Dragonmun website to a really nice pay service by the name of
ix-webhosting, which is where we the website is currently hosted.
Based on experiences in the past, I had made the conscious decision to keep my message board services hosted separately from my website hosting services just so that when one crashed, the information could continue on the other.
This worked out pretty well until
Sudden Launch suddenly lost interest in their services. Once again Dragonmun Studios was left hanging while trying to get help with services on the back end. This lead us to try and find another hosting service that would bring us back to the glory days of the
Irev Days... and we didn't have much luck.
UNTIL RECENTLY!
We made some
dear friends through working with
Stephanie Chateau on her
Carmen Sandiego project. Because of them we were able to create the forums that you are viewing now and the best part about it is that WE CONTROL THE BACK END!
Now if anything happens to well... anything, we'll be able to fix it without depending on someone that might not be willing to help. Thank you Pam and Chailen soooooo much for your help!
Now everyone reading this should go forth and post your brains out. Our community has finally achieved stabilization.
